Overview & History

The HA-420 HondaJet is the culmination of decades of work from the Japanese company famous for taking their time to perfect their products.

The development of the HondaJet started over 30 years ago, with the first flight of the aircraft taking place in December 2003 and full production starting in December 2015.

Since the first aircraft rolled out the factory, the manufacturing plant in Greensboro, North Carolina has built over 150 HondaJets, categorized as a Very Light Jet (VLJ).

HondaJet HA-420 Performance

The HondaJet is powered by two General Electric Honda HF120 turbofan engines producing 2,050 lbs each (4,100 lbs total).

The unique characteristic of the engines is that they are above wing-mounted, leading to a reduction in cabin noise, increase in cabin space, and increased fuel efficiency.

Another innovation that Honda has implemented on the HA-420 is the Natural Laminar Flow (NFL) technology applied to the design of the main wing and fuselage nose which helps to reduce aerodynamic drag.

This engineering innovation helps contribute to the high cruising speed and increased fuel efficiency of the aircraft. Speaking of the high cruise speed, the HondaJet can cruise at a maximum of 422 knots and has a range of 1,223 nautical miles on a tank of fuel.

Not only can if fly faster and further than the competition but it can also fly higher with a maximum ceiling of 43,000 feet. This high ceiling allows the HondaJet to fly above bad weather, leading to a much smoother ride.

HondaJet HA-420 Interior

One of the crucial components of the HondaJet interior is the quietness thanks to those over wing-mounted engines. The conventional location for engines of an aircraft this size would be to mount them to the rear of the fuselage.

Thanks to having the engines mounted over the wings, not only does the aircraft enjoy improved performance, but the cabin remains far quieter than the competition.

The HondaJet features executive seating for four in a classic club configuration (2 seats opposite each other), along with an option fifth side-facing seat.

The cabin seats in the aircraft are multi-axis which slide, shift and lock for maximum comfort.

Naturally, the HondaJet can be optioned to have the entire cabin be controlled from your mobile device.

From the comfort of your seat, you can control the cabin audio, lighting, temperature, and electrochromic window shades within the HondaJet.

As standard, all HondaJets come equipped with a fully enclosed private lavatory featuring a flushing toilet and an optional cobalt-blue washbasin.

In terms of seating, the HondaJet has four seats in a club configuration, the additional optional side-facing seat and since the jet is rated for single-pilot operation a sixth passenger can also sit upfront.

However, it is worth noting that even though it is rated for single-pilot operation if you are chartering the aircraft most reputable operators will insist on having two pilots upfront.

Cockpit

Upfront the HA-420 is equipped with a fully integrated Garmin 3000 avionics sweet which features three large 14-inch high-definition touch screens.

All flight systems are beautifully integrated and intuitively organized on smaller secondary touchscreens, leading to a reduction in workload for the pilots (or even just one pilot).

Something that is increasingly becoming more obsolete among private jets is the use of a physical control system, something which the HondaJet implements over the more commonplace fly-by-wire system.

HondaJet Purchase Price

The HondaJet is an excellent choice within the Very Light Jet market segment.

The HondaJet price starts at $4.8 million before options.

If you are looking for a pre-owned one, a 2016 or 2017 unit will set you back anywhere between $2.5 million and $3.5 million, showing just how well this aircraft holds its value on the used market.
