For this week of business jet flight activity analysis, we will be looking at the flight activity between September 6th, 2021, and September 12th, 2021.

As has been a common theme for most of 2021, business jet activity, on the whole, is well above the numbers for the past two years.

Flight figures for 2021 have been consistently above both 2020 and 2019. The latter being the most accurate comparison of the last “normal” year on record.

Moreover, the week of September 6th to 12th represents an overall increase in business jet flight activity compared with the previous week.

As usual, US Domestic flight activity is well above any other regional flight activity, representing around 60% of all business jet activity globally. It is, therefore, unsurprising that flight activity dipped on Saturday 11th September in the US domestic market more than in other regions.

All Daily Flights Analysis

When looking at the previous week of business jet flight activity we can see that there was a global decrease in flight activity on September 11th. This dip was greater than in the previous two years.

However, globally, business jet flight activity rebounded on September 12th to exceed that of the previous two years. September 12th activity consisted of 11,695 business jet flights taking place, compared with 6,248 on the same day in 2020 and 10,775 flights in 2019.

Earlier in the week, the figures remained strong, beating out both 2019 and 2020 levels.

Flight activity was consistently over both the 2019 and 2020 levels. As previously mentioned, the only exception to this was September 11th.

As can be seen from the graph below, the 2019 and 2020 figures remained roughly the same from September 8th to September 10th, with around 9,000 flights per day. However, for 2021, these figures were greatly exceeded with close to 12,000 flights per day.

This, therefore, represents just over 30% growth year on year.

Daily Business Jet Flights by Region

When looking at the business jet flight activity by region there is, as expected, far more activity in the US Domestic market.

As will be discussed later, US Domestic flight activity is far above that of the previous two years. Moreover, as previously mentioned, the US Domestic business jet activity represents around 60% of all global business jet flights.

The second most active region is the European Domestic market (excluding the UK). Flight activity for European Domestic remained strong, with circa 4,000 private jet flights occurring per day.

Much like with the US Domestic market, there was a minor dip on September 11th, however, not as pronounced as US Domestic.

Outside of these two regions there remains daily consistency in business jet activity in the most popular regions. US International flights, along with European International, UK Domestic, and UK International all remained consistent throughout the week.

Of course, the UK Domestic market saw the lowest daily figures out of these top regions, with around 200 – 250 business jet flights per day.

All Flights Year Over Year Analysis

The most recent figures demonstrate the strong rebound that the business aviation sector has had over 2020.

Ever since March 2021, business jet activity has consistently exceeded the levels seen in both 2020 and 2019.

This, therefore, demonstrates the strong recovery that business aviation has undergone. Additionally, this represents the large number of new customers entering the market.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that first-time customers are continuing to enter the market and fly private.

Moreover, the data below also shows the strong rebound week on week after the minor slump at the start of September.

Compared with the previous week, approximately 8,000 more flights took place in the week beginning September 6th compared with one week prior.

USA Domestic Flights Year Over Year Analysis

An analysis of the US Domestic business jet flight activity is important given the size of the market. Therefore, comparing it year on year is a key indicator of the health of the industry.

As you can see, the trend for 2021 flight activity is similar between the US Domestic market and all flight activity. However, the key difference is the US Domestic market figures are far more pronounced.

Weekly figures returned to around the same level as the end of July 2021.

Moreover, while the previous week presented a dip that almost returned to 2019 levels, the current week is well above both 2019 and 2020 levels.

Summary

Overall, the previous week demonstrates the continued strong growth of the business aviation sector.

And, as expected, the US Domestic market remains the most dominant market. This, therefore, is why a pronounced dip of September 11th can be seen far greater than in other regions.
