Private Jet from UK to Spain Suitable Aircraft

The aircraft that are suitable for the journey from the UK to Spain will vary depending on a number of factors. These factors include distance, availability and number of passenger. Additionally, your budget will play a large in which aircraft are most suitable.

Private jet flights between the UK and Spain naturally vary in distance and flight time. One of the shortest journeys – London to Barcelona – takes around 2 and a half hours to fly the 643 Nautical Miles (740 Miles) distance. The longest journey that will be considered here is from Edinburgh to Malaga. This is a distance of 1,158 Nautical Miles (1,333 Miles), with a flight time of 3 hours and 15 minutes on most jets.

Therefore, aircraft within the VLJ (Very Light Jet) category will struggle to make the longer distances from Edinburgh. However, flying out of London will dramatically increase your choices of aircraft.

If there are four passengers or fewer, then a great option for most routes is a Cessna Citation Mustang. The Mustang is a popular aircraft that is often available to charter. A great way to get an instant quote is with GlobeAir – the largest operator of Cessna Mustang’s in the world.

A step up from VLJs are Light Jets. These are aircraft that have better range and seating capacity. Furthermore, these aircraft have more space within the cabin for increased comfort. These aircraft can usually carry up to six passengers comfortably. Aircraft within the Light category are the Embraer Phenom 300E, Nextant 400XTi and Cessna Citation CJ3+. See a comparison of all these aircraft here.

A step up from this further are the midsize jets. These are similar to light jets but with a significant bump in range. However, for the purposes of a journey from the UK to Spain, these aircraft are not terribly necessary. They will no doubt provide marginally increased comfort over the smaller aircraft. However, the cost increase for these short routes is unlikely to be worthwhile compared with light jets.

Finally, the largest aircraft – those that fall into the appropriately named Large category. These are the most capable aircraft. They also happen to be the most expensive. These are the jets that have separate living areas, showers, dedicated bedrooms and all the latest technology. For flying across the Atlantic these are the aircraft that everyone wants. However, unless you need the increased seating capacity, the full capabilities of these aircraft will likely be wasted on such a short journey.

Although, if you are planning on flying with a large number of fellow passengers – these are the aircraft to go for. The larger ones – such as the Bombardier Global 6000 and Dassault Falcon 8X – can carry up to 16 passengers.

Private Jet Airports UK

London Private Jet Airports

London has a large number of private jet airports. These range from smaller airports that are used for general aviation, such as Blackbushe airport, all the way up to larger commercial airports such as London Luton and London City. Additionally, RAF Northolt is included as a private jet airport out of London.

However, London Heathrow is not available for private jet charters. Due to the high volume of air traffic, not only would it be near impossible to arrange a slot but the fees would be so exorbitant that it would make little sense. While Heathrow does have a “Terminal Six” for VIPs – it is mostly the Royal Family that use this terminal. If you wish to depart and arrive in West London, RAF Northolt is a far better option.

When choosing which airport is right for you, consider the following factors. Firstly, the location. The primary purpose of private jet travel is to reduce your overall travel time. Therefore, choose the airport that is most convenient to your starting point.

Secondly, landing fees. All airports have different landing fees (learn more about factors affecting private jet charter cost here). Therefore, switching airports is a good way to reduce the cost of some charters. Depending on the airport these can range from a few hundred pounds to many thousands. For example, the landing fees for a Embraer Phenom 300 at London City Airport is just over £2,000.

Thirdly, Fixed Base Operators (FBO) facilities. These are essentially the private jet terminals. All airports have different numbers of FBOs, different facilities and are run by different companies. Therefore, if there are particular services that you need at the FBO, let your charter broker know. They will be able to advise on the best option.

RAF Northolt

London RAF Northolt is in Ruislip, Middlesex, which is just to the West of London. The airport is suitable for private jets. However, the airport is still used by the RAF, therefore limiting the number of civilian slots available.

As you would expect, security at RAF Northolt is extremely strict. Therefore, VIPs and government flights are very popular here.

Please note that flights with pets onboard are not welcome at RAF Northolt. Additionally, no single engine aircraft are permitted to use Northolt. This, therefore, rules out the Cirrus Vision Jet.

London City Airport

London City Airport is the best choice if you need to get into central London. It is, as the name suggests, based in London itself. Located towards the East of London just near Canary Wharf.

Important to note is that pilots must be specifically trained to land at London City Airport. This is due to the approach angle. It is at 5.8 degrees rather than the usual 3 degrees.

Furthermore, aircraft also need to be approved. This isn’t an issue for smaller aircraft, but large jets need approval – for example, see the Dassault Falcon 8X.
